Crocodile gets new home

ISLE OF PALMS, SC (WCSC) - Lost, on vacation or abandoned in strange waters. No one is sure how this American crocodile got into the surf off the Isle of Palms.
"It's not completely impossible that it swam up from Florida but it is highly unlikely. It's more likely is that this animal was either sold as a pet or acquired somehow in Florida," said Steve Bennett from the Department of Natural Resources.
Ronnie Russell from Gator Getter Consultants says he had to go chest deep into the ocean to catch the croc.
"First when I hooked him he about pulled me deeper, but other than that he was pretty easy," said Russell.
But now the 6 foot croc is headed to a new home as Gatorama, a crocodile education center in Palmdale, Florida owned by Allen Register.
"We have the only breeding colony of American crocodiles in the United States," said Register.
A sample of the crocodile's DNA will be taken to see if they can figure out where it came from. There is a possibility that it could have been bred at the very facility it is now returning to
"The crocodile could have come from Gatorama. With some trades that were done years ago we're just not sure but that's the exciting part.
Officials urge anyone keeping exotic pets to be responsible. The fact that someone may have carelessly dumped such a special creature could have caused big problems for the reptile and the people around it.
"It is a first and we kind of hope the last," said Bennett.
Officials at DNR say the crocodile has probably been in the area since last October based on sightings by residents in a Mt. Pleasant neighborhood near the intracoastal waterway. They say had it not been a mild winter the croc probably would not have survived.
Just over 1,000 American crocodiles can be found in Southern Florida living in brackish and saltwater areas. These same kinds of crocodiles are also native to parts of South American and the Caribbean.

Noone had ever seen or heard of one there but there were at least 7 mature fish in his sand pit. Might be the same deal there.
Scientist say that SC was historic range for them but thought them to be extripated. maybe they were wrong.
Intresting
