Who knows how to make $h!t on a shingle? My mom made it all the time when I was young and we would eat it up. I remember gravy and toast and maybe sausage?

well you can put just about any form of meat in there you want!!
I have had it with thin sliced and pan fried ham, fried baloney, deer meat, hamburger meat. but the best was the bacon grease gravy and thin sliced ham with a little bit of sausage!!!!!

WOW i haven't had that in years my mom used to make it with chipped beef. It was great i think it had something to do with not growing up wealthy cause it was cheap to make and it would feed a bunch of folks.

I guess you could, but from what i remember, the dried beef comes in a glass jar, and its shaved real thin.
Have Ms. Amanda pick you some up the next time she's at the store

I've had it before growing up as well. From reading this thread it sounds like there are alot of variations, but the basics are some type of meat in a sauce or gravy on top of toast. My mom made it with leftover beef roast, anykind of dried meat or leftover ham. She always made a white sauce and put the meat in that. Then served it over toast. I have recipes for hamburger-gravy and several white sauce recipes if you are interested. I was told the slang name "***** on a shingle" came from our servicemen and women who were fed this in the mess hall. It is definitely a budget meal, but doesn't have to taste like one if done properly!! |

We always used the left over pot roast.....you know the kind in the crock pot and the dark brown gravy. We also just used plain white bread.........sooo good when that white bread got all gravy soaked!!!
Chit on a shingle was my Dad's army term for any kind of gooey stuff on some kind of bread/roll/biscuit.......kinda open ended!! |

I think they used grade Z beef when they made it for us at boot camp. There were always empty yellow trash cans at the back of the mess hall that said "Beef, not for human consumption". I would eat the hell out of that s&!t and wash it down with a big glass of bug juice (kool-aid without sugar).

My Daddy used to make it with chipped beef.
Oh DROOL! That stuff is SOOO GOOOD! I think he just used flour gravy. And the chipped beef came in a little jar with a red top. But for the life of me I can't recall the name. The jar made a nice juice glass. |
